Ammonites were relatives of squids and nautili which thrived in the seas during the time of the dinosaurs. Their name originates from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon. There were many different varieties, ranging in size from a penny to a tractor tyre. Period: Lower Cretaceous Age: approx. 115 million years Origin: Madagascar Size of one half: 20 x 16.5 cm
